May Blooms

The garden has finally started to come alive the past few weeks and even though the harsh winter took it's toll on my garden, most of it survived.

It's Garden Bloggers Bloom Day again and I'm happy to share some of my blooms with you.

I'll start with my tulips and daffodils. I love this combination of  Tulip 'Christmas Marvel' and Daffodil 'Thalia'.

Tulip 'Angelique'

If there is one spring flower that I wish I had many more of, it's tulips. I just lose too many of them to the critters but I can't resist planting a few every fall.

These are the last of the daffodils. Not sure of the name.

I am loving the miniature flowers you can buy these days. These mini irises stand about 6 inches tall and bloom earlier than the tall ones. So cute!

Another favorite is bleeding hearts. Usually the pink ones bloom at the same time but they are behind this year. I'll try to post some next month.

I lost a lot of my forget-me-nots this winter. Enough remain to hopefully reseed themselves again.

Primroses

Variegated Solomon's Seal

Epimedium Rubrum also known as Red Barrenwort.
The heart-shaped leaves of this plant have a red tinge which turns to bronze in the fall. The blooms may be small, however the whole plant makes an impact in a woodland garden. This plant can be used as a ground cover. I love the foliage on this plant just as much as the flowers. I will definitely be adding more Epimediums to my shade garden.

 Heuchera 'Little Cutie Sweet Tart'

Virginia Bluebells are almost done blooming.

Pulmonaria 'Majeste'

 Dogwoods are in bloom......

and the Crabapples are just done.

They were so beautiful this year.

  1. Your spring flowers look lovely. I especially like the Virginia Bluebells, I planted some last year and they are not blooming this year, in fact the leaves are full of holes from slugs. I will have to treat them with slug bait next year and hope to get some of those beautiful flowers. I do have tons of Forget-Me-Nots for blue color, and love Pulmonaria too. The cardinal in your header is so beautiful!

  2. Thanks for the wonderful post, this May Bloggers Bloom day. Goes to show how much earlier the same plants get going where you are, compared with Nova Scotia, Canada. My bluebells have not yet bloomed, and the Solomon's seal are just two inch spears coming up from the ground.

  3. Your garden is beautiful. Irises are a favorite. Ours aren't in bloom yet but, they are starting to bud and I keep checking like they were pets in labor!
It's interesting that you have things in bloom together that don't bloom at the same time here! Happ GBBD!

  6. Hi, Your yard/garden is fantastic.. Glad Spring has come to you in full-swing now... We cannot grow tulips much either --but love them. Here, it's the chipmunks that dig them up thinking they are 'nuts'.... I love them though.. One of the easiest things we grow here are Irises.. They take so little care --and the critters don't bother them. Even the deer only chomp on them on occasion... We have 20 varieties in our yard right now. I'll feature 10 of them tomorrow....

    Have a good weekend.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  8. I like your miniature iris. Seems like I see them everywhere now, and everywhere they are different. The white bleeding hearts really caught my eye, since I am not so fond of the pink ones.

  9. Gorgeous pictures! I love tulips, too. I keep adding a few every year as well. Even though technically there's no space for them. I can usually come up with someplace to put a handful. Thanks for sharing! Happy Bloom Day!

  10. Gorgeous! Aren't spring blooms the best? I adore your tulips and bleeding heart, and I'm quite envious of your forget-me-nots. I just can't get them to grow for me here in SC. Lovely photos! Thank you for sharing.
