Baked Chicken Breasts in Gravy

Let me start by saying, I love this recipe. It is a tried and true recipe I have been making for years, and it is so moist and delicious.

Sometimes I use chicken strips to make this or I cut the regular chicken breasts in half.

Now, I do not like to make gravy, but this one always turns out great.  It may seem a little thin when you make it, but don't worry, it thickens as it bakes.

Chicken Breast in Gravy

3 lb. boneless chicken breasts
1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp Lawry's seasoning
1/4 tsp pepper

Gravy:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup flour
5 1/2 cups water
1 Tbsp chicken base
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp kitchen bouquet

Instructions for gravy:
Melt butter and add flour; stir to brown a little. Slowly add water; bring to a boil. Add chicken base, salt and kitchen bouquet. Set aside.

Instructions for chicken:
Mix the flour and seasonings. Roll the chicken pieces in the flour mixture. Fry in pan until both sides are browned. I use a combination of oil and butter to fry my chicken. Transfer to baking dish covering each layer with gravy.
Bake at 350 for 1-11/2 hours or juices run clear.

  2. It does look great. I am not a big one for adding gravies other than on a few things, but this one would be wonderful to do.

  7. Gravy is basically a Southern staple, and I hate to admit that I'm terrible at making it! This sounds delish!

    1. Shelly, Its a browning and seasoning sauce. My local IGA sells it and I think Walmart does too. It can be omitted if you can't find it. I like the color it adds to the gravy.

    1. It's a concentrated powder that you mix with water to make broth similar to bouillon. You could substitute bouillon cubes for the powder. Its usually sold in bulk food stores.

  15. By chance do you know if the kitchen bouquet has msg in it....I have to be very careful when using msg. I remember my mom using kitchen bouquet when I was a little girl back in the 50's..but never used it before myself for any recipe. This sounds and looks delicious, hoping to be able to try it if there is no msg. Thank you!!

    1. It does not have msg in it. I use the kitchen bouquet almost more for the color than the flavor. I like how it darkens the gravy.

    1. I have not tried it but given that the chicken is partially cooked by frying, I think 2-3 hours on high or 3-4 on low would work. I'll have to try it sometime.

  24. This sounds like a great recipe. Have you tried making the gravy with milk rather than water? I feel like it might make a richer gravy, perhaps?

    1. It is delicious the way it is but I'm sure milk would work just fine.

  25. The finished product doesn't look anything like the picture above. The gravy is brown from the Kitchen Bouquet, and I'm not sure why its in there since Kitchen Bouquet is for beef gravy and sauces to enhance the beef flavor. It just covered up the chicken flavor in the gravy and made it taste just a little like chicken gravy but not much. I only used 1/2 tsp according to the recipe directions. I would leave it out for more of chicken flavored chicken gravy.

    1. I personally don't care much for chicken gravy and I like the flavor and color it adds. You can certainly omit it if you like.
